Rhetorical Analysis
The article ‘Sorting Through the Science on Marijuana: Facts, Fallacies, and Implications for Legalization’ is written by Itai Danovitch, M.D. According to the author he says that in the United States, nearly one-third of the population has used marijuana at least once, and among users of illicit substances, seventy-four percent report using marijuana. By this means the author purpose of this paper is to review the scientific literature on marijuana, focusing on what marijuana is, what it does, its putative benefits, and its potential harms.
Audience/Purpose
In this article most of the time the author remains neutral, he is not attacking but in many times it seems that the author is defending the idea of remaining drugs illegal. He is a very neutral person because he always remains neutral to the circumstances because he is always looking the welfare of people. He is here to praise the effects of using marijuana but he is very professional at the time he is doing it. The authors purpose towards the audience is to teach them all the effects of marijuana in medical ways since he is an M.D.
The intended audience in this article is most likely to all people in general who are out there wondering about marijuana issues and effects that may have in them if they decide to start using drugs. He wants people to if they can be away from drugs because he knows the consequences marijuana can bring to their life and this is because marijuana is very addictive and he does not want people to get involve in that addiction. He never refers to certain people to whom the article may be directed because knows marijuana will be there for any people that wants to try it. The author uses ethos, pathos, and logos as a way of gaining the audience/readers credibility, by showing his emotions, showing arguments and giving just clear and complete information that can be understood for all people.
Ethos
The author of this article Itai Danovitch, M.D. establishes very clearly his knowledge in this situation but also his credibility. He is a Medical Doctor and by this his credibility increases amazingly. ‘Ultimately, policy determinations on marijuana should rest on some objective valuation of its impact on individuals, as well as the public health’ the author is not approving neither rejecting the use of marijuana. He as a recognized doctor just wants the health of other people. He establish that people should be more carefully about this drug. Many people doesn't understand the effects that marijuana may have in them because they are not well informed about this subject. The author argues that there are people out there that wants to learn more about but they are afraid of the reaction of other people because they worry about what they think. What conveys his authority in this article is that he at all time remains neutral through the entire article because he emphasizes he just want the safety of people but also he wants people to be careful about the wrong information other people may give them.
Pathos
The author contributes to the issue of the emotional perspective by leading the reader to explode what this issue can cause to them. ‘When marijuana is consumed, the THC that is absorbed causes the syndrome of intoxication by stimulating cannabinoid receptors in place of anandamide’ By this we know that the author has many information of the subject about marijuana. The author appeals in the emotions by establishing that he always is taking care about peoples health. He tries to connect with audience by giving his own experience about the topic he is writing on. The use of pathetic element is not successfully employed because he never focuses in his emotions. He always talk in a very professional way and never into a sentimental one. The author is a professional person since he is a Medical Doctor because he just says the reality of things and not the feelings of other people.
Logos
The principle lines of reasoning used in this argument are that the author takes very certain examples and explains clearly what are the effects of marijuana. This is because he always makes people to make a reflection about their decisions and the consequences of their actions. The author refers to to the use of marijuana as many decisions different people may have about the use of marijuana. He never says if it is correct or incorrect but he states the reasons or the effects of marijuana and from there he starts making the structure of communication from there. The authors has use very good the use of logos because he gave many information about the marijuana, statistics, medical issues, consequences and many others. Since he is a very prepare person he has many knowledge of the subject and from there people believe in the author and his logistic.
Conclusion
To finish the appeals the use of ethos, pathos, and logos making a great contribution to this article. With every single appeal the author tries to always keep the audience attention. He first use ethos to show the authors credibility, then the author uses pathos to get the audience emotions and finally he uses logos by using and showing the authors logic behind his arguments. After all the author makes a clear explanation about the topic and also to the audiences. He never states if its correct or incorrect the use of marijuana he just explains the consequences of using it.
